“Smart but Stupid”

TWO street kids caused a stir in Harare’s CBD last night when they sped off with a car they had been instructed to watch over.
The “joyride” or “theft” ended in sorrow after the car, a Mercedes A160 rammed into a parked Mazda Demio at the corner of Sam Nujoma and Jason Moyo Avenue in the capital.
The owner of the Merc, an unidentified lady, was last night still shocked after her car was damaged, “I don’t know what happened. What I only know is that my car has been involved in an accident,” said the lady.
However, one of the street kids claimed that the owner had instructed the touts to drive off in the event that municipal traffic cops pitched up before she returned.
“She doesn’t want to say the truth because she is afraid of getting into trouble. I heard that she instructed the guys to put a parking disc now she is refusing all that,” said one Charle who patrols Sam Nujoma street.
The street kids, who were replaced by Easipark, seem not to have fallen out of business after the new development by car owners who were not ready to co-operate with the city council.

“Car owners leave us with car keys so that we can put in the parking disc when the council comes. That is a mistake because if you are giving a stranger your car keys you are being naïve. One can just decide to drive off like these guys have done,” said another urchin.
Most of these street kids who guard cars cannot drive and the closest they have ever been to the steering wheel is when they are cleaning cars.
The police on the scene took statements from the urchins who covered their faces from the cameras. A car from Aquiva Wireless whisked the two urchins to the police.
