Trouble with tops - 2007-2011 Bentley Continental GTC convertibles

2007 Bentley Continental GTC at Robison Service

Over the years, Robison Service has acquired a reputation for knowing convertible tops on Rolls Royce and Bentley cars.  As a result, we see cars with all manner of problems.  Intellectually challenging as that may be, it sometimes makes me long for the days when service was simple and the only convertible top problems we saw were from something obvious, like vandalism.

This week we saw out first failure of a new Continental GTC top mechanism.  This car came in with an opening problem, and damage to the outer fabric.  The owner thought he needed a new outer skin and some straps he’d seen broken.  He’d done some research online and found people talking about strap breakage, and the holes in his outer skin made that part of the problem self-evident.

However, as is often the case, we found more to the story.  When we cycled the top we saw the rear edge of the top (which folds up) was scraping the edge of the swing-up boot.  This had been going on long enough to scuff the paint from the boot and cut the fabric bead of the top right through to the metal.  In addition, the top was folding wrong, and there were several patched holes to the left of the rear window.

“The dealer I bought it from must have done that,” the owner explained.  He told me he’d assumed the car would need a top, and he’d budgeted $3-4,000 to make the change.

When we looked closer, we saw that one of the inner securing straps was broken, and the cables and headliner were beginning to unravel on the left side.  It was cleat that something had gone wrong on the left side of the top.  It looks like the straps (which keep the top in place as it folds) had ripped away from the top, which left the top bunch up and tangle in the bows.  We’ve seen that happen on Azure cars, and it often leads to big trouble there, as the tangled fabric causes the bows to bend, and the now-misaligned top will never work smoothly no matter how you adjust it.

Indeed, when we made some measurements, we found the two rear bows were slightly out of alignment or bent.  The way Bentley engineers designed this system it does not take much misalignment to cause a collision between top and boot, with the virtual assurance of additional trouble.

Looking at the workshop manual, it appears the only reliable way to fix this problem is to install a new top assembly, at a cost of $14,500 plus installation.  Looking online, I see there are aftermarket suppliers offering the Haartz top skins alone for $2,800.  However, a skin alone won’t fix this situation.  And once you get into replacing the pad, liner, and inner bow pieces the costs quickly approach that of a complete assembly.

The owner of this car looked at three other similar Bentleys in Florida, and saw the same damage on each.   That makes me wonder if this is a designed-in problem that will plague every Bentley convertible, or if these are just four unlucky people.

So here’s my question:  How many Bentley GTC owners have experienced convertible top trouble?  What was done to fix it, and how long has the repair lasted?

"I have never written a review for Yelp before, but my experience at Mastermind Enterprises was just to great not to give them a thumbs up.

I took my Kia in to mastermind as I was told by another mechanic that I had a short between the blower motor and the relay. I was expecting to pay $300-$500 to get it fixed. When I was driving over to drop the car off, I hit a bump and the blower came on. When the mechanic called I was told that he weren't sure what the problem was as the problem was hard to diagnosis due to the fact that the blower was working at the moment. He said that he had replaced a connector; he thought that was the problem, but couldn't guarantee it. When I asked about the charge, I was told there would be no charge as he thought he had fixed the problem, but wasn't positive. Wow that really surprised me. An honest mechanic? I would have to say yes. It has now been 4 days and the blower is still working consistently, instead of working sometimes and not others. Although the shop is many miles from my house, I will be taking it to MasterMind from now on. They have even teamed up with Enterprise car rental to give you a great disconnect on a car rental while they fix yours. Honesty, customer service orientated and friendly what more could you ask for?"

Fall Recommendation That Your Vehicle Requires

August 27, 2013

With summer coming to an end, means your vehicle will also need attention to keep it running effective for the new season. Keep your vehicle well maintained is not only wise but it will "Save" you not only a lot of money but grief.

Vehicles need to be fully inspected for all seasons, winter creates many headaches for drivers and having your vehicle inspected is the first step you should have performed before winter arrivals.

One of the very first items that should come to your mind, is winter tires, having your existing tires inspected or researching a set of new tires is an important factor that many wait until the last minute. Keep in mind just because your tires have a lot of thread left and they look good, winters life expectations is approximately 4 years. What happens is the compound that make up the tires dry up and making your tires unsafe for any type of driving.

Some of the recommendations we recommend that you should always do for  any season is the following items that l will list for your peace of mind driving.

Inspection of Tires, should always be performed at least once a week, for proper tire pressure, as winter approach tires will loose more air during the winter then any other month. Make sure you have no visible cracks on your tires either on the side wall or in between the threads. This is what could happen if you fail to do the above.

Your Cooling System, will also need a lot of attention, makes sure your antifreeze is performing at it's best level, investing on tester is also a wise idea, they cost like around $5, a good investment. Make sure the mix is correct 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze and the level is full.

Replace Wipers, summer wipers do not work as well as proper wipers in the winter, so you should at least check them or have them replaces with a wiper manufactured for winter or just a set of new wipers. Make sure your wiper sprayer is working properly and your wind shield fluid tank is full.

Clean Your Battery Terminals, inspection of your battery terminals will keep the flow of the required electricity to operating your vehicle at its peak performance. Clean the sulphur that builds around the terminals with a wire brush. Always lubricate your battery terminals with any petroleum products, this will help provide the build up on your battery terminals.

Inspect Your Spark Plugs,   properly gapped spark plug will not only improve your gas mileage, but it will allow your vehicle to perform at its peak performance.

Have Your Brakes Inspected, should be done every three or four months depending on how much city driving you do. Keeping your brakes inspected for wear and tear is a very safety related item of your regular maintenance check list. Most shop will inspect your brakes when you have an oil change.  Your front

Front End of your vehicle, inspecting all the moving and none moving components, such your ball joints, idler arms, pitman arms, shocks, wheel bearings and have your vehicle aligned at least once a year. This will add life to your tires and saving you a lot of money in the long haul.

Oil Changes and rotating your Tires. You should have your oil changed regardless of which comes first the 3 months or 5,000 km is what we recommend to protect the life of your engine. Keep in mind that the oil in your vehicle is like the blood in our bodies.

If you have enjoyed this article feel free to ask any question you may have and l will reply to your question and provide solutions to your problem.

The TCS Auto Program gets its first car donation!

Arrived today . . . !

I am pleased to report that our TCS Automotive Program has received its first auto donation - a 1998 Land Rover Discovery.  This Land Rover's lucky owners have the great fortune of heading to Spain for a sabbatical year of study, and they decided to donate the old Rover and replace it when they get home.

I certainly appreciate their thinking of us, and the work we are doing for young people with challenges. The opening of our TCS Auto school is truly a long-standing dream come true for me.  Even though school districts and state agencies are covering the tuition we still have other un-covered costs.  Like most schools, we'll look to grants and donors to fill the gaps.

Cars like this may be sold to raise money for scholarships and other support, or they may be dismantled and turned into teaching materials.  This particular Rover still has a lot of life left, so it will be put up for sale.  We've actually already had a family ask about buying it, for one of their kids!

The TCS Auto Program is a satellite campus of Tri County Schools, part of Northeast Center for Youth and Families of Easthampton, MA. NCYF is a private nonprofit corporation serving young people and families with emotional and developmental challenges.  The TCS Auto Program is located in John Elder Robison's Springfield Automotive Complex right next to Robison Service.  John is an adult with autism, a bestselling author, an advocate for young people with differences, and one of the visionaries behind this school program.  He's also the founder of J E Robison Service, a company that repairs and restores high-end automobiles for collectors and enthusiasts.

Porsche 911 blown air box failures

Back in the 1970s, Porsche went from carburetors to fuel injection in their 911 series cars.  The system they ended up using for most of the cars was called CIS, and it relied on a mechanical system of sensing air flow and metering fuel in response.

The incoming air was pulled through a box whose outlets were the six pipes to the intake and whose inlet was the metering flap.  There was just one problem with this arrangement - the metering flap went down(in) but did not go up (out.)  When the engine backfired through the intake, there was nowhere for the pressure to go, and the plastic airbox blew open.

This started happening as soon as the cars went on sale, and the market responded by developing a blowoff valve - a spring loaded valve that pops open and releases backfire pressure harmlessly while holding tight in normal operation.

This system was fitted to every Porsche 911 right through the appearance of Motronic engine management in the 1984 model year.  Amazingly, we still see cars that have never had the blowoff valve installed.  And they still get towed in, blown up!

Airbox with blowoff valve installed

Blown air box - the cost of not having a valve
The valve is under $100, and can be installed in less than two hours.  Fixing a blown air box is much more involved, requiring engine removal and $700 of additional parts.

The moral of the story - have your car serviced by people who know the vehicles, and have them inspect the car from time to time.  An inspection by a qualified specialist would have revealed the missing valve and saved this most recent owner a $2,000 repair.

Franchisee Spotlight: Jim Lehman, Malvern, PA

Jim Lehman, 50, a longtime classic car enthusiast, is opening his first Honest-1 Auto Care location with hopes that his sons will want to follow in his footsteps.

During the summer of 1980, right around his 18th birthday, Lehman took some money he was saving and invested it in the stock market. He left it there while he attended Ursinus College as an Applied Mathematics and Economics major with a minor in Computer Science. When Lehman graduated in 1985, he realized the money he had put into the stock market grew a lot faster than he expected. At that moment, he was inspired to go into finances and investing.

Lucky for Lehman, he found the Vanguard Group, a local investing firm of about 500 people, where he started as a phone representative. Lehman stayed with the company for 27 years, working his way up to principal, and doing his part to help Vanguard become a world-class financial service company with $2.5 trillion in assets and over 10,000 employees in the Philadelphia area.

As his 50th birthday approached, Lehman decided it was time for a career change. “I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit,” he said. “I am a risk taker and I wanted to do something on my own. I thought that leveraging my business experience, my passion for cars, and desire to start my own company was a perfect fit for Honest-1.”

How did you learn about the Honest-1?
I have always been an avid classic car lover. My parents helped me buy a 1972 Firebird to fix up after high school to keep me out of trouble until I left for college. They thought it would take me months to get it up and running because the engine was bad, but within two weeks, I had it all fixed-up and ready to go. That’s when I developed a love for cars. But, I always made college and a career a priority.

As I approached 50, I had to decide what to do with the next 10-15 years of my life. I looked around for automotive companies and found Honest-1. They shared my morals and ethics, including being eco-friendly, starting long-term relationships with clients and providing good value and an upscale feel. I thought the auto industry could really benefit from those values.

Why did you choose an opportunity with Honest-1?
Honest-1 has a lot of the same characteristics as the Vanguard Group, the company where I started in 1985. I was attracted to Vanguard early on because of their strong ethics, reasonable costs, and positive treatment of employees and customers. I think that those three qualities (ethics, honesty, and integrity) apply to Honest-1 as well. After working for Vanguard as a phone representative, I also realized that I loved people and working with customers.
I chose to pursue Honest-1 because of the great people there and the opportunity to get in on the ground floor being the first shop in Pennsylvania. I liked the branding and the flexibility that the company provided, especially knowing that I could tailor it to the region and the market. I heard a lot of people complaining about their mechanics and not knowing who to trust or where to go. I want to open this Honest-1, knowing that I could give people a great value and amazing customer service.

What challenges have you overcome to get where you are now?
Opening a franchise requires a bit of a risk-taking attitude. For example, I had worked for the same company for a long time and had stability there, but knew I wanted to do something else. From a financial standpoint, I tried to invest well, plan ahead for the unknown, and mitigate risk along the way. The other big challenge was finding the right people to work with me to get the business up and running. Luckily, I have a lot of good friends who have helped at all the critical junctures.

What are your expansion or development plans? What is your end goal with Honest-1
Generally speaking, I would love to see more Honest-1 locations across Pennsylvania, particularly in Chester County. Customers would be well served with an expansion of our service area, but, I want my current location to be at its best before I expand. I already have a lot of people knocking at my door asking me if they can get in on the business, and I have investors that have already expressed interest in me opening another location. In the future, I would love for my two sons to get involved with the business. I want to be able to pass it along.

What are some of the publications you read? Local? National? What is your goal publication with your business?
I am an avid reader and have always enjoyed reading financial and business publications like the Wall Street Journal, the Economist, Fortune, Kiplinger’s and Money Magazine, as well as my plethora of car magazines. One of my favorites is Muscle Machines by Hemmings Motor News – it’s usually a race between my son Mike and I as to who’ll get to it first. Car and Driver is another that’s well read by the family.
Do you have any interesting hobbies or passions?

I spend a lot of time with my family—my wife, Beth, and my two sons, Michael and Christopher. We like adventures and spending time in the finger lakes of New York. I like anything outdoors such as road biking, kayaking, skiing and boating. Of course, I still love fixing up classic cars—right now, I’m working on a couple of Pontiacs and my wife’s Porsche though the business seems to be my biggest hobby right now. I am also a bit of a history buff and love reading about the revolutionary war, and the early history of the United States. There’s so much rich history right here in Chester County it’s hard not to be!

Jaguar XK8 and XKR convertible top hydraulic problems

I’ve written a few articles about the issues with Jaguar XK8 Convertible top hydraulics over the years.  I’d like to begin by referencing Jaguar’s own technical service bulletin on this topic -

TSB 501-33 -  1997-1999 Convertible Top Operating Slowly - Amended April 2003

Issue: early XK8 Convertibles may experience slow operation of the convertible top, or slow or erratic operation of the latch. These conditions are caused by a tendency of the Univis hydraulic fluid in the system to slowly evaporate, and in certain conditions to gel within the hydraulic system pipes and hoses. From VIN 037189, vehicles in production have been filled with an improved fluid, Pentosin CHF 11S.

The service bulletin informs us that the fluid may gel, and the top may stop operating as a result.  On the face of it, the story sounds pretty benign.  Lately we have seen things take a turn for the worse.

During the past six months three early XK8 Jaguar convertibles came into Robison Service with slow convertible top complaints.  Two cars were leak free; the third was showing the familiar hydraulic oil drip from the header bar.  On each car we found original fluid in the top hydraulics.  Two of the cars were still in the hands of original owners, and the third had been owned by its current owner since three years of age. All were certain – there had never been an issue with the top before.

After changing to CHF11S fluid (and in one case, changing leaking lines) all three cars developed additional leaks from the ram seals and lines.  Why did that happen, we wondered?

A close examination of the failed parts offers some answers.  The first clue can be seen in one of the pump reservoirs, shown after thorough flushing and change to CHF11S fluid.  You can see the fresh CHF fluid as green liquid in the bottom of the reservoir.  Above that, lining the bottom of the reservoir, you see a slimy mix of the two fluids.  At the front of the reservoir is a hard lump of what started out as Jaguar hydraulic oil, circa 1998.

We already know the old hydraulic fluid was prone to thicken and solidify in chunks.  What we now know is that those chunks get into the seals of the rams and latch, and chew them up.  But they do not always leak, because the chunks of congealed oil act as leak-plugs, which means the problem worsens with age, while remaining invisible.

All that changes when the fluid is flushed.  All of a sudden you have thin, fast moving oil flowing through the system.  As the chunky old fluid is washed away, leaks appear.  The solution:  Replace the lines, rebuild the rams, and rebuild the latch and pump.  All the chunky old oil has to go, as do all the seals, and total rebuild is the only way to accomplish that.

My takeaway from this:  Change your hydraulic oil, just like any other fluid.  It was the chunky deteriorated fluid that caused the seal damage.  If these cars had gotten top fluid services every five years, there is a good chance this total failure would not have happened.  Having said that, I must also point out that many carmakers (Jag included) use plastic hoses now, and those get brittle and fragile no matter what’s in them.

The lesson for owners of pre-2000 XK8 convertibles:  If you have trouble with the top, be prepared for the possibility of leaks after flush, and if that happens, rebuild the whole thing and have done with it because the alternative will be replacing everything one part at a time, which will cost you a lot more in the end.

The importance of having your wheels re-torqued, keeping you safely on the road

August 22, 2013

One of the most forgotten processes done by most auto repair shops and dealership is reminding the customer to come back to have their wheels re-torqued.

Re-torquing your wheels is a safety feature that has to be performed within 50 - 75 Km after you had your tires switched over. When ever you switch from summer tires to winter tires or visa a versa. This process has to be done with any cost to you as a customer.

Patterns to follow when torquing your wheels

It is not really that difficult to torque wheel fasteners properly, but it's not difficult to foul up the job either. The guidelines are very important to follow, each vehicle has a vehicle manufacturer torque specifications following those instructions to the letter. this information is normally found in the owners manual.

Your shop should always also inspect the threads and mating surface to ensure that everything will fit clean and snug. One major trouble spot can occur if wheel fasteners are not OE. Make sure when your remounting a tire/wheel assembly the wheel fastener is absolutely compatible to the type of seat it will be torqued.

torque wrench

If you ever feel a vibration in your vehicle. This is often followed by premature tire wear and brake pedal pulsation. In many cases the number one cause of brake pedal pulsation is uneven wheel fastener torque. Just a small difference of 20 percent between any two wheel fasteners is too much.

The rule you should you always be aware of, any time a wheel is removed, it should be re-torqued. So you should drive the vehicle for 50 -75 km and then return to that dealer and have that wheel or wheels re-torqued. before leaving the automotive shop, ask when you should bring the vehicle back to be re-torque.

this is the last thing you need to happen
