Cooling System Maintenance

July 5, 2012

How often should you change your antifreeze and have it flushed properly. Antifreeze manufacturers recommand changing the coolant once a year well some service manuals stipulate flushing and refilling the radiator every 24 months, regardless of how many miles or klms you used up.

Antifreeze serves two important functions , protecting your cooling system at temperature extremes and also inhibiting rust and corrosion in the system.  With many different types of antifreeze that also have additives that help lubricate the water pump and thermostat that has many advantage over pure water in the radiator.

Rust and sediment will accumulate over a period of time in the cooling system. When your flushing your radiator according to the guide lines provide to you in your owners manual will keep your cooling system clean operating properly.

Various chemical additives are formulated to improve cooling systems over all performance while driving your vehicle.Rust inhibitors are specifically designed to reduce oxidation and neutralize acids as well as keeping your water pump and thermostat lubricated. other chemicals improve the coolants heat-dissipation properties and claim up to 20' F reduction in operating temperature.
