All over from Asia........Indonesia (Surabaya & Jakarta), Thailand, Singapore & Malaysians (Sabah, Glenmarie, Sri Kembangan, Sunway, Sota Concepts -Mobile, Kedah, & KL)

We benefited from Frank, as he demonstrates the new Revolution Technics of Detailing.

Many a times, we thought learning Detailing from forums, blogs, and websites were sufficient. Detailing is not only about polishing. It's about understanding how products are used in tandem with polishing pads. It is also about the machine used. It was astonishing to know that Fein Rotary polishing machines could be used as "Dual Action" if one knows how to place the pads onto the machine which Frank showed us. Detailing also is not totally reliant on skills although it is essential but being knowledgeable in various manufacturers of lacquers.

Rolls Royce woodwork

Have you ever thought about re-doing the wood in your classic car?  Here is an example of wood restoration in a forty-year-old Rolls Royce, to a standard that’s better than new.

Here’s the car, to give you a sense of perspective.  It’s a rare long wheelbase 1972 Silver Shadow, later called a Silver Wraith.   This example is very clean and mostly original.

The wood finish was hazy from age.  Take a look at the photos and you’ll see what I mean.

It's in good shape, but the hazing of age has made it look rather plain.  It didn't look this flat 40 years ago, and the owner wants that original pop back.

We began by removing the wood from the car, and then removing the brackets, seals and other bits that are secured to the wood trim.  All those bits need to be photographed and tagged so they can be refitted later on.

Quite a bit of disassembly is required to remove all the wood.  It's deceptive because the big dashboard pieces come off in minutes but then it takes days to get the bits that surround the front and rear windows, the vanity mirrors, the seats, and all over the doors and body.

In this car you can see the wood substrate for the dash.  Rolls Royce cars built after the early 1970s used a metal frame for the dash - this is one of the last traditional wood framed dashes.

The piece above goes to the right of the glove box, and it's split in back.  That wasn't visible until it was removed.

When you get the wood off the car you see the chassis number written on the back of each piece, along with the original craftsman's mark.

The process of “stripping” the wood takes at least as long as removing it from the vehicle.  Plan on several days labor.  If you mix these little bits up there will be hell to pay when you try and put the car back together.

The wood pieces are inventoried checked and sent off to the master woodworker.  We work with several folks, each of which has different areas of skill and specialization.  William Rau did the work on this car.

If you have a Rolls Royce, and you want the best there is, he is your man.

This job involved some repair where the wood had cracked from age or the veneer had lifted.  Knowing we had to replace some veneers this car’s owner opted to redo all the veneer in a more unique way.

We asked Rau for some samples with stronger grain, and talked about changes to the pattern.  He sent us some sample veneers for approval, and we talked about stylistic changes.

We decided to remove the old 8-track tape player, and fill the hole.  That meant a new piece had to be made for the center, and he sent that to us in rough form to verify the fit.

Finally the finished wood arrived.  What a change.  The detail Will put into the veneer is finer than anything Rolls had done originally.  The door cap pings are now rolled smoothly, like the coach built cars of the fifties and the Turbo Rs of the nineties.  And the depth of grain and color is just stunning.

This car's owner also decided to fit a wood steering wheel.  The Rau wood wheels are famous and this one was matched to the rest of the wood in the car.  It gives a better feel than the original plastic though some purists prefer the original plastic.

The finished result is truly striking.  It totally transforms the interior of this car, and brings it well beyond where it was when new.

This is the door before:

And this is the door now:

Here's the whole dash:

Parking Fees Decrease Caused Controversy among Parking Staff in Monrovia

For the second time in a row this month, a noisy protest held opposite the Foreign Ministry building in Monrovia on Monday disrupted traffic grabbed the attention of drivers passing by. It was the latest controversy this week surrounding the Monrovia City Corporation’s (MCC) recent plan to charge fees for people to park their cars in certain areas of the city.

Students working as parking attendants who would normally be checking vehicles for fees paid instead held placards protesting against the City Parking Management’s (CPM) new policy lowering wages, which they argue violates labor laws.

While some parking attendants are on strike, others told FPA that they don’t think management’s decision is wrong.

One of the demonstrators named Jiphine Gehyigon told FrontPageAfrica that the protest was organized to empower students and tell legislators that they needed fair pay or else their school fees would turn them into slaves.

According to a document circulated at the protest, CPM has revised its pay scales for parking attendants.  Whereas parking attendants formerly received a flat wage of US$60 per month, their monthly salaries will now start at US$30 for 301 hours of work per month and increase on the basis of their performance on the job.

Samuel Dorbor, a parking attendant on the picket line, said that management told them that they would now work for a minimum of US$30, with more to come on the basis of a commission scheme.

Dorbor explained that one has to sell 200-250 tickets in one month to make the minimum US$30, and sell 500-550 tickets per month to make the maximum US$75. He described selling 500-550 tickets as “difficult to achieve.”

Dorbor also pointed out that parking attendants’ jobs are being made difficult by monthly permits that the CPM is issuing, which allow pass holders to park anywhere without paying a cent to attendants.

“We had several meetings with management but they seemed not to care,” Dorbor claimed. “So we decided that nobody must work today and that is our decision.”

CPM was previously criticized for what some people argued were unnecessarily high fees. That caught the attention of legislators and Monrovia Mayor Mary Broh, who subsequently reduced parking fees from LD$50 per hour to LD$30 per hour.

Speaking on behalf of CPM on the latest controversy of parking attendant wages, spokesperson Abaku Tumban said that the introduction of the new wage policy is to maintain and hopefully increase the number of university students for whom there is room in the program.

“The funning thing about this is that the attendants have not tried the policy yet to known whether it can work or not,” Tubman said. She explained that the paid parking policy is new and that there have been problems paying workers what was originally promised based on the amount of revenue that the program is bringing in.

“In order to maintain the number of parking attendants that we have, we needed to push harder than expected to make sure that everybody is delivering at the same performance,” she explained. Tubman said that some parking attendants were not working as hard as others, and that the cuts in wages are an attempt to see that all attendants are paid fairly.

“We are trying to make sure that everybody is delivering at the same performance,” she emphasized. Tubman also stressed that it’s not all parking attendants taking part in the strike.

“The reality is, this morning, when we woke up and saw them striking, we called a meeting at 11:00 a.m.,” she recounted. “And only a few of them showed up.”

While some parking attendants are on strike, others told FPA that they don’t think management’s decision is wrong. Parking attendant Amstrong Wesseh said that he thought the policies introduced by management will encourage attendants to take their jobs seriously.

“I want to be frank with you,” he said. “They (CPM) are not attracting seriousness to this work, but only people who want to receive money at the end of the month.” Tubman issued a warning to those who she described as not wanting to work.

“We are not going to keep people who are a liability,” she said. “If your boss gives you a challenge and it is tough but you do not deliver without even trying, I think that that says something about your character.”

Watch out for more updates...

Here are some of the benefits of a catalytic converter, you should know

June 13, 2012

As your engine burns fuel, it produces many different types of different gases that have an immediate effect and it is very bad for our environment. Noxious gases are hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides. By having a catalytic converter in our emission systems we have taken the necessary precautions from polluting our environment.

The catalytic converter is installed in the exhaust lines, between the exhaust manifold and the muffler and makes use of chemicals that act as a catalyst. A catalyst is a chemical that causes a reaction between other chemicals without having any effect it self. The whole purpose of the catalytic converter is to convert the pollutants from harmful gases to environmental friendly through the tail pipe at the rear of your vehicle.

With all the harmful gases that enter into the catalytic converter that is made of stainless steel and looks like a container. The actual inside of the converter is coated with chemicals called aluminum oxide platinum and palladium, in some case you will also find the chemical called rhodium. These chemicals inside the converter will cause the carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons to change into water vapor and carbon dioxide to reduce nitrogen oxides.

Keep in mind that you can not use leaded gas with an engine that was designed to have a catalytic converter, because of the lead that coats the chemicals in the converter, since the chemicals in the lining can not come in contact with the pollutants. As car manufacturers got wiser and started using tougher parts and coating them with special metal. As we all know the lead was an excellent source of reducing wear on some of the engine parts.

The Ontario Drive Clean Program, your emission system!

June 7, 2012

The Ontario drive clean program is a mandatory vehicle emissions inspection and maintenance program. It provides many benefits to our health and the environment by reducing smog-causing pollutants through testing and repairing vehicle emission systems.

It is your responsibility of having a yearly emission test on your vehicle in order for you to renewal your registration and licence.  Consumers are protected when buying or selling their vehicle, making sure that the vehicle meets the emission standards. This way your buying a vehicle that has all of it's emission components working to the standards set out by the Ministry of Transportation.

By having your emissions tested, your protecting the environment from major domestic source of smog and several other toxic contaminants.  Smog as we all know can have a serious health consequences for many people particularly children , elderly and those with respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses.

What to do if your vehicle fails

If your vehicles doesn't meet the Emissions Standards, you will be provided vehicle Inspection Report (VIR) this will explain the areas of where your vehicle failed.  Do not leave the dealer without this piece of paper. This report is very important for you having your vehicle repaired correctly other wise you will not qualify for the $450.00 repair cost limit.

You will need to repair your vehicle either at a local garage or at an accredited Drive Clean Facility (DCF) if it is done at a non accredited facility then you will have to bring in all your receipts when you come in for a re-test. If you need more time to qualify for the $450.00 Repair Cost Limit (RCL) is the maximum you will need to spend at a DCF on emission-related repairs before obtaining a conditional pass.

Once all the repairs have been done, you can qualify for the $17.50 plus HST, but you will have to go to the same DCF location you had the original test done at, you have 120 days to take advantage or you will have fork over another $35.00 plus HST.

Read this carefully!

Once you have received your conditional pass you are ready to get the renewal registration for your vehicle and sticker for your licences plate.  With a conditional pass, your vehicle is still subject to on-road enforcement if emissions control equipment has been removed or the vehicle has visible smoke.  The conditional pass is only valid for you to renew the plate sticker under the current ownership.

88 Testimonials & Counting!

I can't speak to the quality of the work performed here because I only got an inspection and estimate (my engine was shot and not worth the replacement). However, I will say that I was very impressed with the service I did receive. They were accommodating about my junked car being parked in their lot for a few days, they were extremely friendly, and they offered what I felt to be legitimate and helpful advice. I will be keeping Mastermind Enterprises in mind for any future work.

Why oil spraying your vehicle makes sense.

June 4, 2012

Undercoating your vehicle is one the smartest things you can do to protecting your vehicle and keeping all your repairs at a vast reduction. The main reason is that when you do have your vehicle undercoated your providing lubrication to all major and functional components such as wiring, lights and electrical items.

Some of the major components that are protected when you do have your vehicle oil sprayed, this will ensure that they operate freely. Windows and all door mechanisms, door locks, electrical systems, brake cables, Linkage for transmission, remote mirrors, door hinges, hood and truck hinges, reduces friction on all moving parts, power antennas and C.V. joints.

Some of the other major components that are protected when you have your vehicle sprayed is the following items. All body panels, spot welds, all chrome, cowl assemblies, headlight pots and adjusters, transmission case, oil pans, sub-frame and hidden box sections, inner frame work, wiring connections and computer chips.

With all the above benefits that oil spraying your vehicle provides and protecting your investment, vehicles that have been oil sprayed from day one always have a higher re-sale value when your re selling or trading in your vehicle. The main reason is your vehicle looks better then most vehicles on the road because you took the time to protect your investment.

I hope this provides enough information for you to take some time and research the pros and cons of having your vehicle oil sprayed each year, is it worth it. Only you can make that decision my answer is it is an absolutely one of the most important features you can do to making your vehicle last as long as it will.

Here some pictures of what happens when you do not oil spray or rustproof your vehicle

As you can see the undercarriage looks
old and rusty.

This could of been prevented
the rocker panel is completely rotten

The other side is the same way
if you had oil sprayed it would not look like this
As you can see all the corrosion has developed
cause brake lines to rust out and leak. Could of been prevented
had he oil sprayed his truck!
