Fixing Power Steering leaks in Rolls Royce and Bentley

One of the most common problems on cars is leakage.  If we can say one thing for sure, when it comes to leaks, it is this:  The higher quality the car, the greater the variety and quantity of fluids it will have to leak.  And all of them will be top grade.  If the car was built in England, its pedigree ensures that every one of those premium liquids will eventually find a path to the ground beneath the car.

While the variety of fluids that can leak may seem infinite, this post will address just one, from one kind of car:  Power steering leakage in 1990-newer Crewe built Rolls Royce and Bentley motorcars.

We see two main sources of steering leakage in these fine cars.  The first is the rack itself, which tends to leak from the input shaft seal and the bellows at either end.  The input shafts leak when dirt works its way down the shaft and ruins the seal.  The bellows leak when the bushings that guide the rack wear, and the rack begins moving more than what the seals can contain.

Here you see dry lines and wetness from the rack seals

Wet rack bellows are a sure sign of bushing and seal failure

The drip below my finger comes from the input shaft seal (above, out of photo)

Looking at the photos you see a typical scenario.  The lines into the rack in the top photo (the most common leak source on many lesser cars) are dry.  The yellow paint on the lines in this photo mark the lines and rack as original to the car.

The rack is the only leak on this 1996 Bentley undercarriage
This rack is dripping from the input, and the output bellows.  As the photo below shows, it’s the only wet thing on an otherwise remarkably dry undercarriage.  It veritably cries out for repair!

So what do you do?

Your first thought might be to simply buy a new rack. If only you could!  At this moment Bentley’s ability to supply factory-rebuilt or new racks is limited.  When new racks are available costs are generally around $3,000 – more than many owners wish to pay for a part that history shows may be worn out and leaking in 15,000 miles.   Simple resealing of the racks is not usually a long-term fix because of the bushing wear, which happens amazingly fast on some cars.  We suspect the most vulnerable cars are those that run fast on rough roads, for that sort of driving puts the maximum stress on the big bushings in the rack.  We think they get pounded from round to oval, and once that happens, leakage is inevitable.

We’ve been sending our racks to specialist rebuilders with good success.  They change the bushings and seals, and set the clearances.  The body of the rack and the big gear pieces seem pretty indestructible.

The next problem area is the steering fluid reservoir.  It’s a simple plastic affair located right next to the engine oil filler.  On most cars a plastic reservoir like this would be a $100 part (or less) but Bentley seems to see the situation differently.  When they ran out of cheap (figuratively and literally) molded plastic parts they commissioned the production of Professional Grade stainless steel reservoirs.  At a cost of $1,200.  Yes, you read that right.  Over one thousand dollars for a container that holds a cup of steering oil.

Leaky reservoir removed from the car.  This one was glued, unsuccessfully.  Don't waste your time.
Even in the rarefied world of Rolls Royce owners balk at things like that.  But what can you do?  We have a solution.

Old reservoir and our replacement side by side

The new reservoir in hand.  It's made from the finest molded foam plastic

Setting the reservoir in place

The finished installation looks totally stock, and works better

We have adapted the common plastic reservoir used by Land Rover, Porsche, and BMW to fit our beloved RR/B motorcars.  We modify the original mounting bracket and with a few hours fitting it looks like the car was made that way.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving (which is about to happen, as I write this post) I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all the discerning motorists who have chosen our company to care for their cars over the years. It's people like you (you know who you are) that make it possible for us to make these discoveries, and devise fixes like you see here.  It's what separates simple repair from craftsmanship, and it's what our crew does best.

Spider Pad, a Twinning Miracle.........

Twins just don't happen only in the natural. The Spider Pad was produced to have both the effects of Lambwool and Polishing pads. As said that Lambwool is airy and cooling , the Spider pad has the linear lines across the pads obtaining the same effect ! Aggressive yet she is Cool........!

We displayed this video to show the preparation before using a Spider Pad. Firstly,  unfold the pad. Since its a new pad, it's essential to have a little more compounds spread onto the pad using a spatula. Using a spatula would even out the compounds on the surface of the pad. Take note ! It's very important to spread the side of the pad because that's where the friction is going to be aggressive when operated onto the surface of the car. After the first time spreading the compounds, there is no need to repeat that amount.

The Neighbour asked how was it that Scholl had this idea ....Spider Pad designed. Well, for sure Peter Parker did not turn up in Remseck one day cause he lost his job as the lead actor for Spider Man .!............but rather the concoction of Spider Pad was made by the second generation Executive Officer of today's Scholl Concepts. !

p/s

apologies for the video quality, as I was only allowed to upload Quick time  :(

Region Developer: Mark Porcelli, Middlesex, New Jersey

Mark Porcelli has been working with cars since he was 10 years old. Mark grew up in Colonia, N.J. and worked a lot of his life in the family-owned truck dealership, so he’s always had experience with vehicles and repairs. The experience caused him to want to own his own business one day. On the road to that, he wound up at a Midas franchise in 1998, successfully running it for six years. When he joined them, he inherited $540,000 in store sales, and when he left, it was $870,000, so during his time there, he saw a 70 percent increase in sales and revenue. Deciding to sell, he then worked for Snap On Tools’ corporate location in 2004 and was responsible for managing franchisees, selling tools to shops and recruiting, as well as mentoring. After three years, Mark moved on and has been with Honest-1 since 2007.

At Mark’s Middlesex location, he is also offering free brakes for much of May, most prominently during the week of April 29. Mark is offering this no-strings-attached service technically through Saturday, May 18, while supplies last. They are literally giving away front and rear brakes, and all customers have to pay for is the labor. On average, this can be $100 to $120 per front or rear pair. (Of course, if it’s an extremely rare vehicle, or there are more repairs needed following an inspection, additional fees may apply.)

How did you learn about the brand?
I heard about them through a letter when I was working at Snap On. They were looking for shops with an interest in selling and converting.

Why did you choose an opportunity with Honest-1?
Their core values are what I’m all about. I believe in integrity, which is what the brand is predominantly about. In 2006, I bought the master territory and opened a shop a year later while I still worked a day job.

Are you involved with any charities or do any community outreach with your business?
I have been a member of the local Elks Chapter for the past three to four years and have done a fundraiser for them in the past. I also continue to support local school organizations. Through the First Aid Squad members organization, on June 15, they are having a family fun emergency services day and will be selling good neighbor cards, which include two free oil changes, and two other coupons: $20 off front or rear brake service and 10 percent off anything your vehicle needs up to $25.

What challenges have you overcome to get where you are now?
The community here knows everyone, so to get through that, it took a bit of time to prove we can fix cars effectively and not take advantage of people. We continue to grow year after year, which touches back on the integrity.

How many employees do you have right now?
I have a shop manager that runs the front counter. I also have three full-time mechanics and myself.

What are your expansion or development plans? What is your end goal with Honest-1?
From a regional developer standpoint, I’m always looking for qualified franchisees that want to provide awesome customer service, in a very difficult industry.

My goal is to get one store open in every county of my territory area. You just do it one store at a time. I’m not looking to buy another for me, but I do want to find other franchisees that fit for other counties.

What are some of the publications you read? Local? National? What is your goal publication with your business?
Our challenge is our media market is technically New York City; my tiny town is a small fish in the big pond. But, there are local outlets such as About Our Town, which already covered us, but we would like to be in the Courier News or News 12 New Jersey.

The Home News Tribune did an article on us in February 2010, and there’s of course the Star-Ledger too.

Do you have any other interesting hobbies or passions?

I like to snowmobile in the winter, motorcycle in the summer and go to the beach with my family.

THE TURTLE 1 ( GHANA )

TURTLE 1

African Automotive design is alive and well in Western Africa. Ghana to be precise. This is an intriguing concept vehicle that found life in the middle of a project and a local community.  Here is a brief detail on how it all came about.

" Visual artist Melle Smets, researcher Joost van Onna traveled  to Kumasi in February 2013 to build a African concept car, in collaboration with the local community.

They Set up Shop and created a unique automobile in three months. Philosopher Bram Esser joined the team and worked as an apprentice in local workshops to learn from the life in Suame Magazine. Filmmaker & Photographer Teun Vonk documented the building process of the concept car. The development of an African concept car is the connecting theme guiding the viewer through the international flow of waste processing as well as the local automotive cottage industries."

Lambwool, the preequisite to Foam pads?

Technically speaking, a Lambwool is used not only for it's temperature advantage. It is also because the compounds applied do not "splatter" unnecessarily all over like you first learn how to eat ice cream. Maybe some of you still does ....:)

The quality of a Lambwool depends on the density of the wool. Even then there is major difference between natural and synthetic. Just to make it clear that "Synthetic" does not mean it comes from "Clone Lambs" but rather polyurethane. Again, this article is not about manufacturing as this is entirely a different thing altogether but I am writing from a point of application.

Does Natural wool has better cutting ability ? Yes ! Aggressiveness ? Obviously , more aggressive.

Using a Lambwool would cover larger areas, it's cooler and distribute material evenly resulting in maximum usage. The compounds would not escape easily but very much embeded into the wool.

As I was to conclude this article someone just apps me," Have u seen a lambwool in black ?" I want to throw this question to the floor ! Huh ! As the song goes ....Ba Ba Black sheep, have u any wool ....?...u wanna Rap it ?...coming next !

Franchisee Spotlight: Tom Watson, Prior Lake, MN

Tom Watson grew up In Brooklyn Center, Minn. and has lived in the Metro area his entire life. He has been working for Jim Henkel, the Honest-1 Auto Care Area Developer, since 2010 — when Henkel only had one store in Minnesota. Watson began his Honest-1 career focusing primarily on outside sales and providing back-up support in stores as needed. Over time, through extensive training and education, he assumed the role of Operations Manager of the Minnesota market.

Watson first met Fred Haynes, remote franchisee of Honest-1 Prior Lake, when he accepted the position of general manager at Haynes’s Burnsville, Minn. store. Haynes is based in Chicago and is a remote owner, leaving most responsibilities to Watson, who will continue to manage the day-to-day operations for the Burnsville store while overseeing the new Prior Lake location.

Watson made his debut in the automotive industry as a general service technician changing oil, tires and performing light duty repairs. Eventually, Watson realized that he would be better suited in sales and took up the opportunity when a position became available in the company that he was working for at the time.

How did you learn about Honest-1?
I found Honest-1 through an ad posted online, and after one interview, I knew it was where I wanted to spend my career. The very philosophy of how business is conducted, combined with the unique service offerings, makes Honest-1 stand out far ahead of its competitors.

What do you hope to achieve as the general manager of this store?
As manager I hope to provide 15-20 new jobs to the Prior Lake area, set a new standard in customer service and earn a fair profit to generate humble growth for the company.

Do you have any plans to broaden your managerial responsibilities?
My goal is help to educate and inspire teams of automotive professionals all over the Twin Cities and eventually own my own Honest-1 Auto Care stores.

Are you involved in any charities or community groups?

I am active in the Girl Scout Troop that my seven-year-old daughter belongs to.

Region Developer: Miguel Cruz, Northern Virginia

Miguel Cruz, 58, was born and raised in Puerto Rico, but moved to the U.S. at the age of 18 to join the U.S. Army as an electronic technician. He served in the Army for almost 16 years before leaving to join the Civil Service in 1994, where he performed various duties including equipment management and managing contracts for automotive maintenance.  After Cruz retires from the Civil Service in January 2014 to focus on Honest-1 as the Region Developer for Northern Virginia, he will have worked for the government for close to 33 years.

How did you learn about the brand?
In preparing for my retirement from the government, I started looking into businesses. I was going to go on my own but began looking at franchises and came across Honest-1. What appealed to me about them was their business model, which is one that I had envisioned doing had I opened my own business. It was family-friendly and honest.

Why did you decide to take up an opportunity with Honest-1?
After nearly 33 years working for the government, I thought it was time to retire and chase my dream of being a business owner. I grew up in the restaurant business and I always liked business. The automotive field appealed to me because I like working on cars. I haven’t been through formal training in automotive maintenance but I grew up repairing and working on my own cars.

Why did you decide to take on the role of Area Developer?
It was a no brainer for me to become area developer – I hope to have multiple stores and go beyond just being a franchisee.  Also, it’s basically a sales position and I’ve been in sales before. I don’t have experience as an area developer but I didn’t feel like I needed it with the training that Honest-1 provided.

What challenges have you overcome to get where you are now?
The main challenge we have faced in Northern Virginia is the availability of properties in the right area. Zoning for automotive businesses is a real hurdle to overcome because it takes time, which is why it’s important that I open my own store and have something to show future franchisee prospects. One thing that I take into consideration is the convenience of a customer driving to the facility: how far do they have to drive, is there much traffic to get to the location. I try to look for convenience so I’m limiting myself to the areas that I can set the stores in. We’ve worked hard to overcome that challenge and now we have landlords calling us to offer us sites in the right locations.

What are your expansion or development plans? What is your end goal with Honest-1?
There is a location in Alexandria that opened in 2012 before I became area developer and we are currently working on the lease for a franchisee in our Ashburn location, which we plan to open in June 2014. We have at least six sites that are available to us should we decide to move forward. Now it’s a matter of finding candidates to put on these sites. If I don’t find applicants I’m going to open them myself and turn them over to future franchisees. I plan to open around 30 stores in the Northern Virginia area within the next eight to 10 years.

Why did you decide to join the military?
When I was growing up, I always liked watching TV, in particular a program called Combat!, and for some reason, that type of life had always caught my attention. I thought it was a good opportunity to get out of the island and see other parts of the world and serve my country. So when I was almost 19, during the Vietnam era, I joined the military. I didn’t think twice about it. I learned a lot and it opened my eyes to a different world and different people.

Before I joined the military, I was a shy guy. Once I joined the military, I started moving up the ranks and inherited more responsibilities and it put me in a position where I had to stand in front of people training and teaching them. The military gave me confidence and I lost all my inhibitions when it came to standing in front of people.

Why did you decide to join the Civil Service?

After I decided to leave the U.S. Army, the job market was tough in the civilian sector. I had just finished 16 years working for the government so it didn’t make sense to throw that away, so I decided to pursue a career with Civil Service and combine my military time to total 33 years with the government.

Tips to Get Your Car Winter Ready

Prepare your car for winter!
Winter is coming and the holiday season is here again! Along with all of the hustle and bustle that go with this time of year, you need to remember to get your car winterized, too. By preparing your car for winter at Mastermind Enterprises, you can take on all of your challenges just a little easier. The severe weather conditions during winter can cause serious damage to your car just by the temperature being too cold.

Make sure your car has the proper level of all its fluids, including antifreeze, power steering, radiator, transmission, and windshield washer fluid. It’s important to be up to date with your regular car maintenance and consider winter's special challenges on your vehicle. At Mastermind Enterprises, your safety is one of our top concerns. Here is a winter weather auto maintenance checklist for your car to keep it in the best shape for the cold weather to come. The items on this checklist should keep your car working properly in even the most severe winter weather.

Winter Weather Auto Checklist

Check Your Tires
One of the first things to do is check your tires, tire pressure and the tread depth. Always make sure you have enough pressure in your tires. For every drop in temperature of 10 degrees Fahrenheit, tires lose a pound of pressure. An underinflated tire is as hazardous as hydroplaning on water and won’t “bite” through snow down to the hard pavement when you need it to.

Tires should have good tread (1/16" deep) to handle the snow and to be safe. Experts agree that it’s best to go 1/8" deep on your tire tread. You need the deepest grooves possible in your tires for maximum safety.

Check Your Fluids
Check all of your car’s fluids including oil, antifreeze, power steering fluid, power steering, radiator, transmission, and windshield washer fluid. Make sure you use a washer fluid with antifreeze properties for winter weather use.

Keep Your Gas Tank Full
It’s better for your car, your gas mileage, and your peace of mind.

Get New Windshield Winter Wipers Blades
Your windshield wiper blades normally last about a year. Wiper blades should clear your windows completely with each swipe. Replace blades if there is any streaking. Limited visibility will prove especially hazardous during storms with rain, snow and fog. You need your wipers for extra help during these times.

Check Your Battery, Belts & Hoses
Your battery has a normal lifespan of approximately 5 years. Ask your mechanic when you get your oil  changed (every 3,000 miles) to do a battery check before it's too late. Cold weather drains the life out of your car's battery quickly – especially if you park your car outdoors. Broken or cracked belts and hoses can you leave you stranded and stuck in the cold.
Get your car winterized at Mastermind Enterprises
before the winter comes!

Check Your Brakes
Have your brake system thoroughly inspected by an ASE certified technician to confirm all of your brake components are ready for the slippery roads of winter. Brake lines, rotors, pads, drums, and brake fluid are all vital components to keeping you safe on snowy and icy roads.

Check Your Lights
Check all of your lights and replace burnt out bulbs (if needed).

For more info about your car's maintenance needs,
contact Mastermind Enterprises at 303-297-2886
to get your car winter ready.

We will put together a complete list for maintaining your car to make sure that it's in good shape and ready for the white wonder of winter. There are some additional things you can do to further prepare your car. Check out one of our upcoming blog articles for more information on how to completely winterize your car!
