Crestview Auto Service and the winter tire advantage in Saskatoon

Let's face it, most of us do not think about  our vehicles until we run into a problem....and that problem may be a major inconvenience at best; an accident at worst. Having your vehicle serviced by people that you trust is an absolute must.   Let our team of highly trained technicians at Crestview Auto Service work with you to make sure your vehicle is ready for the road.

Winter tires are more than a gimmick when compared to all season tires. The two biggest differences being the rubber composition stays much softer and pliable from 7 degrees Celsius and colder and the tread pattern will have many small incisions in the tread pattern to allow the tire to squirm and stick to the icy road surface.

All season tires have compromises built into them that limit traction as temperatures drop below 7 degrees C, on ice and in the snow.  The rubber compound is harder and tread patterns are more solid not allowing the tire to stick to the road surface, this gets worse the colder it gets and happens even if the road is dry. Any tire designated with the Snowflake on the sidewall is much better than an all season tire. But even in the winter tire market we have many differences in traction and longevity.

Generally you will get what you pay for, the entry level, less expensive tires will have less flexibility and traction the colder it gets while the better winter tires remain flexible even in the deep cold we get on the prairies. When purchasing winter tires it is important to buy all 4 not just 2 for the driving wheels, the reason for this is the traction difference between summer and winter tires will have you out of control with the winter tires sticking to the road and the all season tires losing traction and sliding.

Having 4 winter tires will have you sticking to the road when others around you are hitting the curb. Crestview Auto Service is here to help you choose the right tire for you needs and budget. Crestview Auto Service Saskatoon Car Care Advice: Water Pump

The cooling system in an engine has five components: the radiator, the radiator cap, the hoses, the thermostat and the water pump. The water is literally the heart of the system. Just as your own heart keeps your blood circulating through your body, the water pump keeps coolant circulating through your engine.

The water pump is driven by a belt, chain or gear and only operates while the engine is running. It has a limited life span and sooner or later will have to be replaced. You can check your owner’s manual to find out how long your water pump should last. Some can fail at only 60,000 kilometers, but almost all of them fail by 160,000 kilometers.

Water pumps don’t gradually wear out; they fail. In other words, they’re either working or they’re not. A failed water pump has to be replaced.

Water pumps can fail in two ways: they can spring a leak or their bearings fail. Leaks can come from a cracked pump, but usually develop at the gasket where the pump attaches to the engine.

If you hear a low-pitched grinding sound coming from the water pump, it’s time for a new one. If you see coolant leaking in the area near the pump, it needs to be replaced. Also, coolant on the driveway could indicate water pump failure. Many water pumps aren’t visible because they’re under a plastic cover, so you may have to take your pickup to your Saskatoon service center or Crestview Auto Service to know if the water pump has failed.
If your water pump is run by the timing belt, then it should be replaced when you replace the belt. Most timing belts need to be replaced at around 100,000 to 150,000 kilometers. The labor for replacing a timing belt is about 90% the same for replacing a water pump, so it’s cost-effective to take care of them both at the same time.
Also, if your water pump develops a leak (if it’s powered by the timing belt), you have to replace the timing belt as well since contamination by coolant fluid damages the belt. It just makes sense for Saskatoon motorists to replace both of these critical parts whenever either one needs it.

Replacing a water pump at Crestview Auto Service is a car care issue that almost all of us Saskatoon car owners face eventually. They don’t last forever. On the other hand, we can extend the life of most of the components of our vehicle through important preventive maintenance. Just as exercise and diet keep our heart healthy, regular check-ups and fluid

Why You Need snow Tires during winter

February 13, 2013

Understanding how winter tires out perform all season tires you will have to understand what is underneath all that snow and how the pavement changes drastically during the cold months of winter. It becomes a very irregular landscape with sharp points, deep valleys and when your car rolls along these two different surface rubber and the road meet, they must interface for a good grip.

Snow tires with its rubber compounds are a softer rubber that allows the tire to have more flexibility and flexible enough to wiggle and fit into the microscopic grooves in the pavement. This allows the winter tires to perform and achieve the  maximum contact and use all of its surface to push off as it moves forward. The winter tire much more flexible, if it was not, it would never be able  to get into the grooves in the pavement.

Winter tires will last a good 4 years, possibly 5 years, just because you have great looking thread on your tires will not mean that the tires will perform to what they originally where forecast to do.  The reason is the compound find in the rubber over time will get hard, making the tire unsafe for winter driving and more then likely hydro plane in wet, slushy and snowy conditions, the tire will no longer have the flexibility it once had.

It is important that you have your tires checked each winter before having them installed, taking it to an authorize tire dealer is the best choice they understand how winter tires perform and what to look for in tires that may not meet the future winter conditions of the up coming year. A rule of thumb is they should last a good 4 to 5 years before they become unreliable and unsafe for winter driving.

Once a week is a good habit to check all of your tires PSI making sure that they have the correct tire pressure on each wheel. when the temperature drops, your tires will lose some air making them unbalance with the specification of the manufactures specs. Always take the PSI from inside the drivers door, you will see a yellow stick with tire pressure and other information, never use what a tire says as the PSI.

If you follow the simple steps of checking your tire PSI once a week during winter, as your doing that look at the tire for any visible unbalanced ware and tear on your tires indicating that you may need a front wheel alignment or something is not functioning correctly. You can purchase a good tire pressure monitor for less then $10.00 a very wise investment.

Checking the tire pressure
weekly is a good habit to have

There is an old saying in the tire world the cheapest snow tires will out perform the most expensive all season tires during the winter months.

Tips for Safe winter driving

February 6, 2013

Winter tips for safe driving and protecting your vehicle for the long haul, some of these recommendation are advise directly from AAA. Just a good reminder for all of us who have to drive in the winter.

-Avoid driving while your fatigued. Getting the proper amount of rest before taking on winter tasks reduces driving risks.
-Never warm up a vehicle in an enclosed area, such as your garage.
-Make certain your tires are properly inflated.
-Never mix radial tires with other tire types
-Keep your gas tank at least half full to avoid gas line freeze up.
-If possible, avoid using your parking brake in cold, rainy and snowy weather.
-Do not use cruise control when driving on any slippery surface (wet, ice, sand.)
-Always look and steer where you want to go.
-use your seat belt every time you get into your vehicle

Use the above items as a check list for safe driving this winter and always perform a walk around once and a week and make sure your tire pressure is accurate. Check the inside of the drivers door for the correct (PSI) for your vehicle never use the tire pressure on your tires that is suggested on your tires.

Why "RJ's" charges by the hour not by the Book!

November 9, 2012

Something that is over looked by many customer, for the simple reason they have
not really understood how the hours where calculated on specific work done to their vehicles. Most shops use a fix rate for each specific job that is worked on. Let's take this example into consideration a "Front Brake Job" including replacing  "Front Rotors" and "Ceramic Pads," calls for 2 hours, most good techs will do this in hour or less. But the customers will be charged for 2 hours not the one hour it took the tech to perform this work.

This is called a flat rate system that most repair shops use in order to accumulate additional hours towards their pay checks and repair shop, it is a win, win situation for the repair shop and the tech. Here at RJ Pick Up Service we charge by the hour if took us 3 real hours and the book calls for 4.5 hours you will only get charged the 3 hours. This is what we call a share win, we both benefit from this process, your happy and we have your business for future service.

This system has been in place since day one here at RJ Pick Up Service! Well most shops are empty we have had a steady flow of work and on some cases had to turn work away or re book for another time and day. So next time you get any work done on your vehicle you should ask this question is your shop on a flat rate or hourly rate. When you compare quotes, you will see a drastic difference in pricing from hourly rate to a flat rate quote.

Our main focus here is too educate our customer through articles we write about on how to maintain your vehicle and keep your vehicle running to it's peak performance. By sharing this type of information we all benefit; we do work that is only needed to be done, and keeps our shop busy, all that really matters. Thanks to our loyal customers and look forward to our future customers.

Now is the time to also to change your tires and have your winter tires installed, call us for an appointment and we will also make sure your vehicle is totally ready for the up coming winter.

Don't let Winter catch you off Guard

October 29, 2012

Why do people always wait for the last minute to switch their tires. as soon as they see snow it becomes time to switch them. This is the time to do it, let us look and evaluate the condition of your winter tires, keep in mind winter tires last 3 to 4 years depending on the brand you own. The compound used in winter tires become harder each year making your tires not as safe as they should be, Most people think, well my tires look like they have a lot of tread left, but that is a misconception of what the expected life of a winter or any tire for that matter.

We are now Booking all our appointments for re and re tires on rims or off rims. When you do get your tires remounted, make sure that you have a follow up to have your tires re torqued, this is very important and should be part of your package. Re torquing means that your wheel bolts have a possibility of becoming loose and should be re torque, takes just a few minutes, we provide all our customers with a reminder that they should have this no charge item looked after. Safety is everything!

Some of the new special that are in effect at the moment with Tire-Craft Dealers have a look at the picture and enter your name and have an opportunity to win  a $4,000.00 winter escape, how nice would that be.

Good Luck with your entries and look forward to providing all our loyal customer with
the professional service we have being doing since day one!
