What's your comfort zone?

As car owners, we push a few buttons or turn some knobs, and voila, we have warm air blowing on our feet or cool air chilling our face. How does all that happen? Well, it’s all thanks to the air blend box. This box lives behind the dash and conveys just the right temperature of air right where it is wanted.

Let’s break it down. First there is the blower fan that circulates the air through the heating/air conditioning system. The fan can blow at different speeds, depending on how much hot or cold air is required to be comfortable. The blend box can either deliver fresh air from outside, or recirculate air from inside the cabin. Saskatoon auto owners often choose to recirculate air when first starting the vehicle until it starts to either cool down or warm up. In recent weeks it was recommended to only recirculate air in the vehicles due to the forest fires and the high air quality health index.

The next thing the blend box does is convey airflow over the heater core to warm the air, or over the air conditioner evaporator core to chill it – it can also blend both hot and cold to get it just right. From there the blend box can direct the air out into the passenger compartment through the floor vents, the panel vents, the defroster, or a combination. All of this allows drivers to customize the climate just the way the like it.

Some vehicles have different climate control zones, like one for the driver and one for the passenger – or even more zones for the back seat. Additional blend boxes are used for this. Climate controls could be manually adjusted or computer controlled depending on your vehicle.

The blower motor and all of the little actuator motors that open and close the various blend doors can fail and need to be replaced. Most new vehicles come with a cabin air filter. This filter cleans the air before it gets into the blend box. If you neglect changing the cabin air filter, it can get clogged, smelly, and even allow mildew and other microorganisms to build up in the blend box.

At Crestview Auto Service, we can carry out a heating/air conditioning system-cleaning service that will clean and disinfect the system, restoring a fresh clean scent. If you are not getting enough hot or cold air, let us inspect your system, diagnose the cause and set things right. Also, don’t forget to replace the cabin air filter on schedule. Keep in mind; if you live and drive in dusty conditions or where there is a lot of pollen or other pollutants, you may need to replace your cabin air filter more frequently. We are here for you.

To change or not to change? (Your cabin air filter)

To change or not to change? (Your cabin air filter)

Cabin air filters are found on most late-model vehicles. The filter cleans the air that comes into the interior through the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system (HVAC). It cat...ches dust, pollen and other airborne material to make your car’s interior cleaner and healthier even more important if you have allergies or other respiratory problems, which can make riding in a car unpleasant. Some have added activated charcoal to the filtering element. These do not just filter particulates, but also odors and some common exhaust gasses.

Some signs that you need a new cabin air filter are reduced airflow through your HVAC system, such as when you turn the fan onto high speed and you get more noise than increased airflow. If you drive in heavy traffic, an area that has poor air quality, or dusty conditions you could need to replace the filter annually or even more often. Recommendations on when it should be replaced vary by manufacturer and depend on your driving conditions.
Many cabin air filters are located behind the glove box and are easily accessible by freeing the glove box from its fasteners. Others are located under the dashboard and may not be easy to reach, or under the hood where fresh air enters the HVAC system.

The Ontario Drive Clean Program, your emission system!

June 7, 2012

The Ontario drive clean program is a mandatory vehicle emissions inspection and maintenance program. It provides many benefits to our health and the environment by reducing smog-causing pollutants through testing and repairing vehicle emission systems.

It is your responsibility of having a yearly emission test on your vehicle in order for you to renewal your registration and licence.  Consumers are protected when buying or selling their vehicle, making sure that the vehicle meets the emission standards. This way your buying a vehicle that has all of it's emission components working to the standards set out by the Ministry of Transportation.

By having your emissions tested, your protecting the environment from major domestic source of smog and several other toxic contaminants.  Smog as we all know can have a serious health consequences for many people particularly children , elderly and those with respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses.

What to do if your vehicle fails

If your vehicles doesn't meet the Emissions Standards, you will be provided vehicle Inspection Report (VIR) this will explain the areas of where your vehicle failed.  Do not leave the dealer without this piece of paper. This report is very important for you having your vehicle repaired correctly other wise you will not qualify for the $450.00 repair cost limit.

You will need to repair your vehicle either at a local garage or at an accredited Drive Clean Facility (DCF) if it is done at a non accredited facility then you will have to bring in all your receipts when you come in for a re-test. If you need more time to qualify for the $450.00 Repair Cost Limit (RCL) is the maximum you will need to spend at a DCF on emission-related repairs before obtaining a conditional pass.

Once all the repairs have been done, you can qualify for the $17.50 plus HST, but you will have to go to the same DCF location you had the original test done at, you have 120 days to take advantage or you will have fork over another $35.00 plus HST.

Read this carefully!

Once you have received your conditional pass you are ready to get the renewal registration for your vehicle and sticker for your licences plate.  With a conditional pass, your vehicle is still subject to on-road enforcement if emissions control equipment has been removed or the vehicle has visible smoke.  The conditional pass is only valid for you to renew the plate sticker under the current ownership.
