Good Service & Good Fuel Economy

Most Denver motorists want to save on gas and seek our advice on improving fuel economy. Mastermind Enterprises Auto Repair Shop in Denver is frequently asked, "Is really worth the extra effort? Just how much money can I actually save as a motorist in Denver?

At Mastermind Enterprises Auto Repair Shop, we’re focusing on the things you can do to improve your truck fuel economy driving around Colorado. We’ll tell you the potential savings per gallon of gas for different maintenance and service for your vehicle.

Replacing a clogged engine air filter. Your engine needs enough air to burn fuel efficiently for the best fuel economy. A clean air filter means you get plenty of air. The fact that the air is clean protects your engine. That can save you up to 10% or 35 cents a gallon.

Fixing a faulty oxygen sensor can improve economy by up to 40%. That’s a whopping $1.40 in savings per gallon! Bring your car to Mastermind Enterprises Auto Repair Shop and we'll check your oxygen sensors. Chances are that if an oxygen sensor is kaput your check engine light will come on.

Now, there’s any number of things that could cause your check engine light to come on besides oxygen sensor problems. But if it’s on, get it checked out as soon as you can at Mastermind Enterprises Auto Repair Shop.

Here’s an easy one. Inflate your tires to the recommended pressure. That could save you 3% or 11 cents a gallon. Even a little drop in tire pressure will bring down your fuel economy, so check your tires every week.

Your vehicle manufacturer has recommended a specific weight of motor oil. The recommendation is based on engine design and will give you the best protection. Using a heavier weight could cost 1-2% in reduced fuel economy, or up to 7 cents a gallon.

Here’s one that’s free: Take it easy when you drive. Aggressive driving (we've all seen this on Denver roads and highways), rocketing away from stop lights, standing on the brakes, punching it for lane changes - really takes a toll on your fuel economy. Cutting out aggressive driving around Denver can save 5% or 18 cents a gallon. Now on the interstate it gets really costly: 33% or a $1.16 a gallon. Think about that - and leave a little earlier.

A related item is exceeding the speed limit. For example, if the speed limit is 60 miles per hour an additional 5 miles will cost 7% or 25 cents a gallon. Over 15 miles per hour will cost you upwards of 80 cents a gallon.

The last thing we’ll talk about is excess weight. Our trucks tend to accumulate a lot of things and the weight adds up. Clear out the trunk and only haul stuff when you really need it. For every 100 pounds you can save 2% or 7 cents a gallon.

Our goal at Mastermind Enterprises Auto Repair is to give you the best quality at the best prices in Denver. We look forward to servicing your vehicle soon! Thank you for reading!

-Lock out equipment by removing the ignition key and by disconnecting the battery cables.

-Always disable the electrical system by disconnecting a battery cable or removing fuses for a circuit when working on the electrical system (e.g., starter motor, radio, wiring, ignition, etc.)

-It is good practice to disable the electrical system when working on or near the safety air bags.

-Know how to work safely with all tools and equipment.

-Attach a "Do Not Operate" tag to the vehicle's control panel with the reason stated (such as 'no brakes').

-Use jacks and hoists to move and handle heavy components.

-Use solvents with a flashpoint above 60°C where possible to reduce the risk of fire.

-Clean up spilled oil, grease, fuel and other slipping and fire hazards immediately.

-Inspect compressed air hoses regularly, and immediately replace any which are cracked, worn or frayed.

-Ensure that air pressure reducers, gauges and moisture/dirt traps are cleaned and functioning.

-Dispose or recycle waste materials in accordance to government regulations.

-Above and underground tanks, pump pits, and similar areas are considered confined spaces and can be dangerous. Only specifically trained individuals are allowed entry. Contact your local jurisdiction for more information.

Keep Your Vehicle well-maintained for Fuel Efficient driving!

February 16, 2012

Keep Your Vehicle well-maintained for Fuel Efficient driving!

Keeping your vehicle in top operating condition will save you fuel and money, reduce your long-term maintenance costs and minimize harmful exhaust emissions. A well-maintained vehicle is also more reliable and could be worth more when you want to sell it.

It's usually best to leave the servicing of your vehicle in the hands of trained automotive professionals. They have the knowledge and tools to diagnose and correct problems and to put you on the road to safe, fuel-efficient driving.

Your tires need special attention during winter. Cold temperatures decrease the air pressure in tires, which adds to the rolling resistance caused by snow and slush. Measure tire pressure regularly, especially after a sharp drop in temperature.  Rotating your tires helps prolong their life and improve fuel economy. On most vehicles, they should be rotated every 10,000 kilometers, or about twice a year. Consult your owner's manual for the recommended rotation pattern and frequency for your vehicle. Tire pressure needs special attention in cold weather. It can be expected to drop by about 1 psi (7 kPa) for every 5°C drop in temperature.

Almost all gasoline vehicles on the road today are fuel-injected. A recent study showed that replacing a clogged air filter on a vehicle with a fuel-injected gasoline engine does not improve fuel economy. However the study also showed that a clogged air filter may reduce acceleration performance

Neglecting to replace worn-out oil results in poor engine performance, higher fuel consumption and possibly severe engine damage. Changing the engine oil regularly according to the manufacturer's recommendations is one of the best ways to keep your vehicle in top operating condition. Oil lubricates the moving parts of the engine, preventing metal-to-metal contact, minimizing friction and carrying away excess heat – all of which promote better fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. Motor oil also removes dirt, metal shavings and other impurities from the engine and captures them in the oil filter. You can pay a severe penalty for neglecting engine oil, possibly even needing to replace the engine itself.

A well-maintained vehicle is more reliable and could be worth more when you want to sell it.

A Women’s Point of View: Helping Your Car Go Green

by Colette Cooley, Cars for Keeps Office Manager

The politically correct thing to do these days is to go green by buying and using all things that are environmentally friendly and natural. Buzz words such as ‘recycle’, ‘save the forest’, and ‘black mold’ have been around for a long time, but I think we are finally beginning to “get it”. Moving into an era of saving the planet by going back to basics has merit.

Now, most of us can’t afford to rip up our hardwood floors and replace it with Bamboo, but there are quite a few things we can do with what we have to be more “green”. Let’s talk cars.

Fuel economy is on most of our minds, what with the price of gas going up. Again. So let's look at a few easy ways to cut fuel consumption by getting better mileage.

- Rapid acceleration and going over 60 mph can use up to 33% more gas.
- Regular tune-ups can save about 4% in gas usage.
- Keeping tires rotated and at the proper pressure can save about 3.3%.
- Using the recommended grade motor oil can save you 2%.

All in all, that's over 42% saving per tank of gas. Cha-ching!

Changing a dirty air filter can also improve fuel mileage up to 10%. A little maintenance now can save you big bucks later. Cleaning your fuel system by getting rid of those nasty carbon deposits every 15,000 miles will save you costly repairs in the future and help save money at the gas pump now. A transmission flush removes deposits and buildup and lets the shifting process work more efficiently which will add to the longevity of the transmission and better fuel economy.

These fuel economy and car maintenance tips are just a few suggestions that will allow you to not only "go green", but to keep your car longer. Because that's what we're all about: cars for keeps!
