The purpose of a Timing Belt and Water pump

November 28, 2012

The timing belt which is also known as a timing chain, plays a vital role in the function and operation of your vehicle, also needs to be maintain to the specification of your manufactures specs. The function of the timing belt it turns the engine's camshaft at a speed set by the crankshaft. This allows the crankshaft to operate the camshaft in opening and closing within specific timing with the pistons, which pushes your engine to work properly and efficient.

The timing belt does exactly what it is named after to keep the engine "in time." if for some reason the belt has slipped or it is not properly aligned, the engine will not perform to it's capabilities and may cause your engine to break down. When you have your timing belt replaced you should always have your water pump replaced at the same time as they go hand in hand.

This is a very expensive process having a timing belt and water pump replaced, for the simple reason it is very tight inside the engine compartment. The vast major of the cost factor is due to the labour of getting at the timing belt and water pump, since there is not much room, several parts must be taking off in order for you to actually get to these parts of your engine. This is a job that is not highly recommended for an average garage to perform on your vehicle.

Configuration of Timing Belt and Water Pump
Timing Belt and Water Pump
how it performance
As you can see it makes sense to replace the water pump when ever your are replacing the timing belt as they go hand in hand with the over all performance of your vehicle's engine. Servicing your timing belt is a very costly process but presents an opportunity to extend the life of your vehicle by as much as up too 10 years. Since the timing belt runs on the water pump pulley in most late model vehicles, so it is just a matter of a few bolts to be removed in order to replace your water pump. Since the water pump seals can fail due to extra belt tension and general deterioration caused by age. Replacing your water pump will prevent an unforeseen disaster that could become very costly.

Coatings........Whatever.......

Are you able to make up the interpretation of this picture?

Since it is not a "Mona Lisa" potrait, it's siply a tub of wax and a bottle of a label "coatings".
Many had asked me what is these coatings stuff that spreads like wildfire globally.? Globally?
Not sure, maybe.

Well, I could make these stuff relatively very cheap. But I do hear that in some e-commerce, it is not cheap and comes in a small bottle. However, on the contrary, customers were made to pay thousands of Malaysian ringgit for such application per car.! Moreover, it comes with "WARRANTY"!!! That makes it much more than interesting. Warranty?

In my earlier articles concerning "Oxidation".......I guess not enough fans reading it, Don't they get it? What could possibly stop oxidation? It's a law of nature!

I rest my case. To me, natural wax is the way to go. Periodical maintenance is common sense. Anyone wanting to defy oxidation, would probably resurrect Denham Harman or Johann Joachim Becher.

Original Polishing Pads

I certainly don't know if you could claim that every theft is wrong, but I'll prove to you that every theft is forbidden, by simply locking you up...by....Karel Capek.

The last article of mine about Polishing pads manufacturing was that I displayed a picture of one part of the factory where how these products were made. However,it was not my liberty to show everything as these machines and techniques were company secret.

Some months back in third quarter of 2012,  our market was plaque with "Immitation" pads. These "Immitators" were trying to copy our "Spiderpads". How foolish, how absurd !.

It took us years and much painstaking in designing these "Spider Pads". Obviously, spiderman was of no help at all. Look at the pictures below. The copies were not only disgusting but purely a product of "cheat".

Copies or Replica, however one wants to call it. A Cheat is a Cheat!

-->
Dear Customers,
To imitate someone is to pay the person a genuine compliment – often unintended.
The fact that people are copying our pad designs shows us that, once again, we have
developed outstanding and innovative pads that will give an added value to our
customers all around the world.

One point that really bothers and disappoints me is that the replica pads are offered
at a pretty low price. Therefore, we have analysed the pads in our lab to see the difference
and of course to get an idea about the durability.

-->
After comparing the copies with our high quality pads we know the reason for the
low price: It’s the poor quality of the pads! The pads look very similar to our pads, but on
closer inspection, huge technical differences are apparent: One layer which is used in
the pirated Spider Pad is far too hard, and the other layer is way too soft. The cutting
performance is much poorer and the pad can be killed easily, and also very quickly, during
heavy-duty applications.

The pirated Spider Pad perforation is far too deep. As soon as you start polishing, the compound
will be soaked in the deep slots, diminishing its performance. Additionally, it is impossible to remove
scratches as the foam loses its stability. It is like trying to remove deep scratches with a soft foam pad.
As if that isn’t enough, the velour is not applied correctly. As a result, it detaches pretty quickly if the
backup-pad gets hot or if the pad is used with an orbital tool.

There are further points that have to be improved to compete with original Scholl-Quality. These three
reasons above are easy to reproduce and to understand. Anyone who compares the two pads under
the same circumstances will come to the same conclusion.

My comment:
--> While testing the pads we have quickly noticed that the durability of the copies is approximately
half or a third of that of our original Spider Pads. Customers buying the replica need to know
that and will see it immediately after using them. If the copied pads are used with our rubbing
compounds, the performance of our premium polishes will suffer.

The cut is much lower as the pads performance is not as aggressive to the paint as our
original Spider Pad. Also, the powder is not working in the same way – it is impossible to generate
the same gloss rate. Even if the copies look similar to Scholl Concepts pads, the polishing result
is totally different. It is not a working system anymore and therefore the overall performance and
the finish-quality will suffer! This is the good reason why our pads are sold at a higher price compared
to the pads of some of our competitors. Our outstanding quality and quality-driven philosophy
justifies our pricing level – our development is not finished until our products are perfect!

We manufacture up to 6,000 pads a day for a variety of customers (car plants, bodyshops, boat yards,
detailers, etc). Everyone using original Scholl-Pads understands why the price-performance ratio
is more than fair.

I would like to thank all of our loyal customers for consistently using our products and we will continue to work
on new, more fascinating and inspiring pads and polishes every day.

One well-meant piece of advice to all manufacturers who are trying to copy us: Do not stop at 40%
and do not stop at 70% - if you copy us, then do it the right way and go for 100%!
In the meantime, we will continue to invest in our intelligent team and new machines to develop
the exciting next generation of “Spider Pad” that is soon to be launched.

It is the innovation that drives us and the motivation to offer the best solutions for paint finish applications.

Idling your vehicle affects the environment and your wallet. Here are a few facts you should know

November 21, 2012

Cold Starts vs Idling

You may believe that you're doing the best for your vehicle by allowing it to warm up in the cold weather with a few minutes of idling. In fact, more than just the engine needs to be "warm up" in the cold weather with a few minutes of idling. In fact, more than just the engine needs to be warmed up and this can only happen if the vehicle is moving. For an average vehicle, it takes about five kilo-meters of driving to warm up the engine as wee as the wheel bearings, steering, suspension, transmission and tires.

Shutting the engine down

One of the false arguments made to justify idling is that it cost money to shut the engine, That is a complete misnomer  ten seconds of idling consumes the same amount of fuel as starting the engine after shutting it down. As for wear and tear factor on the battery and starter, it adds up to about $10 per year, compared to saving an average of 66-litres of gasoline a year by simply reducing idle time from 5 minutes to 30 seconds.

Idling and engine wear

Prolonged idling is also one of the worst things the owner can do to an engine. Aside from being a complete waste of fuel (you are travelling zero kilometres for the fuel consumed), excessive idling can contaminate the engine oil, which will lead to premature and very costly, engine wear down the road.

Keep the tank topped-up

The practice of idling with a low level not only stirs any dirt in the tank, but it also promotes the build-up of condensation in the tank, especially in colder temperatures. Keeping the tank topped up minimizes both risks. With 20% more cleaning agents than before. Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasoline's protect intake valves and fuel injectors from performance-robbing gunk while you drive.

When cars break, and break again

Land Rover service. © copyright JE Robison

My friend Bob called me to ask about his most recent car repair experience.  He said, Last week I noticed my brake fluid was low, and the pedal went to the floor.  I took it to the shop, and they replaced a leaking caliper.   Two weeks later, the same thing happened.  This time they say I need a master cylinder?  How come

The experience of sequential repairs is all too common in the automobile business.  Sometimes it’s due to technician error.  But more often, it’s the inevitable result of service policies or the step by step nature of some repair operations.  Let’s look at some examples to see how it happens.

When Bob brought his car in for service the first time, he had a visible problem.  Brake fluid was leaking at one of the wheels and it’s didn’t take much to see the source was a failed caliper.  Replacement was a straightforward job and the garage sent the car on its way assuming it was fixed for good.

Yet it failed again, just a few weeks later.  This time the failure was not so obvious.  There were no leaks at any of the wheels but the fluid was low.  When that happens there is only one place to look in most cars – the power brake booster.  Indeed, when the master cylinder was pulled back from the booster the technician could see where fluid was leaking and he ordered a new cylinder.

The question is, why did this happen two weeks after the first repair?

The answer was clear with a little bit of thought.  When everything is normal the guts of the master cylinder don’t move more than a few thousandths of an inch to actuate the brakes.  When the system gets bled following repair it moves through a much bigger range, half an inch or more.  If the seldom-used reaches of the master cylinder have become roughened by corrosion the act of bleeding the brakes may lead to the internal seals failing.

That’s what happened in Bob’s case.  I asked myself how the repeat failure might have been avoided.  The first answer that came to mind is more frequent brake fluid flushes.  When the fluid is flushed the cylinders are run through their full travel.  Doing that periodically would prevent buildup of corrosion and presumably prevent failures like this.  But at what cost?  The more flushes would have cost more than the cylinder, and required three service visits instead of the one repair.

Some would say the brakes could be bled through air pressure, without moving the pedal.  That’s possible on some vehicles but the problem with that is that you never see the system work through its whole range and that may blind you to another more serious problem.  So that may work, or it may replace a harmless problem like this with a worse one.

In the end I concluded there is no way to assure a “one-step fix” in a situation like this.  Most of the time, when the first job was done, the master cylinder would not fail.  But every now and then, it will.  When that happens you have a two-step repair.

Then there are the so-called emission problems – those “check engine” lights that just won’t go away.  Many motorists believe that scan tools point us directly to failed parts, but all too often that is not the case.  Fault codes are symptoms, many of which have numerous possible causes.  Sometimes we can test and verify a failed part and we have a simple one-visit repair.  Other times the tests all come back good – the problem is intermittent or not picked up by our testers.  Other times we reach a point in the diagnostic tree that says “Replace A and re-evaluate.”  So we replace A and see what happens next.

The problem is, low level emission faults cannot usually be detected on a short drive.  Many require that the car be run through a tank of gas, sometimes more.  As a practical matter that makes the owner the test driver – and if more work is needed, the car comes back.  Sometimes twice, sometimes three times.

I wish there was a way to streamline this, but with the ever-increasing complexity of cars, we face a choice between exchange of major systems where we swap out all the possibilities (prohibitively expensive) or multiple repair efforts (a hassle for motorists).
